Marvel: Crisis Protocol – Toad

Painting has been a bit sporadic over the last few months and the couple of things I’ve completed have been done in a hurry, of which Toad here was the first.

Marvel: Crisis Protocol - Toad

Pretty simple with just two main colours, one of which is an Xpress paint (Imperial Yellow). Interestingly, the Ultramarine blue I used was highlighted by adding Ivory to the base colour and I think because of that it hardly shows up on the pictures – who said the camera never lies?

Saying that, though, the pictures aren’t great, as again, they were taken in a hurry and I didn’t actually look at them until a few days later.

I did enjoy painting his tongue, though, and quite pleased with how it came out.

Anyway, it’s another character added to my list to choose from, and we’re hoping to get a game or two played over the Christmas holiday, which is why my next offering is one for Yasmin’s Roster, The Amazing Spider-Man!

Excellent work on Toad, mate! I like the skin tone (its a bit sickly but not too much!), the tongue has some nice colors and blending, and you can’t go wrong with blue and yellow on the suit either!

I do have a question for you, did you choose to make the base pretty uniform in dark gray to help Toad stand out? It certainly has that effect though I wouldn’t mind seeing a bit of color to add variety and break that up. That is all subjective, of course, and it doesn’t take away from some wonderful painting on this bloke! 😀

      Thanks, Jeff…
The skin worked out about how I intended with a bit of a sickly look. The base, weelllll…. sort of.
The base, especially the wall, was basecoated with an Xpress blue, as I wanted to tie it to his suit, then washed over with mostly black wash and lightly drybrushed with some dark greys.
I then intended to add a splash of colour with the bike frame. I basecoated black and then heavily drybrushed it steel. I then inked over with yellow to give it a metallic yellow colour, which wasn’t too bad at that point. However, I got a bit carried away adding some rust effects and eventually the whole bike was a rust bucket. At this point I didn’t want to spend anymore time on him and called him done.
I’d say the best bit of him is his flesh and tongue, the rest is a bit average really, but I’m happy with that to be able to get him on the table. 🤷‍♂️

That makes sense! There’s definitely an art to applying rust and practice makes perfect like with most things. Getting a miniature’s face right is often the most important part of the whole sculpt so I’d say you focused on the right bits here 🙂

You must be going through a dry patch there then, mate, because I’m the slowest painter on earth!😁

Excellent job on Toad, the skin tone against the bright colors works really well.

Thank you, Dave, I think his flesh is the best bit and am quite happy with how it came out 😃

Terrific painting, I love how bright you’ve managed to get the blue and yellow on his costume. And the face is so expressive the way you’ve painted it.
