RATED!

In an effort to keep things going and continue posting, I’d like to get back to reviewing games, but the time needed to do so has been proving a bit of a sticking point.

Well, over the last months I’ve been considering a way to speed up the process, especially the writing up of the review (anyone that’s read a review of mine will know they can be particularly long and detailed), and found inspiration while reading up on retro gaming consoles – something else I like to dip my toe into (Spectrum 48k anyone?).

When I look around the tabletop gaming world, the blogs, the magazines, and the forums, I notice that there aren’t many people out there doing what used to be done back in the day of the first computer magazines, such as Crash and C+VG (Computer and Video Games), namely, rating games based on criteria such as graphics, sound, gameplay, and similar aspects in the video world.

Well, I think it’s time to change that and I have come up with my new review system – RATED!

This is going to consist of a short intro, a brief overview of how to play the game, and then a paragraph or two, including my rating for each of the given criteria, which I’ll come to shortly.

This, in theory, should enable me to write up a review fairly quickly, as I won’t be going into the detail that I used to by simply giving a short explanation as to why I’ve awarded the rating I have in each section. I also think this will be a fun thing to do, comparing one game with another, and the simplicity of it will enable me to update reviews as I revisit the game.

So, without further ado, here are the criteria…

Components

Evaluate the quality of components such as cards, tokens, dice, miniatures, and the game board. Consider durability, material, and overall craftmanship.

  • 3 – Average: The components are of decent quality. They are functional and reasonably durable, with acceptable design and materials, and the overall presentation is satisfactory.
  • 4 – Good: The components are of high quality. They are durable, well-designed, and made from good materials. The overall presentation is impressive.

So, these are the criteria I’ll be guided by. A quick paragraph or two for each one should suffice, and hopefully, I can crank out a review in a couple of hours instead of the days it used to take.

I’ll start by going through the games I’ve already reviewed, just so I can get them rated, and throw in the odd new game as I go. Eventually, all being well, I should catch up, and all reviews will be new ones.

This rating system gives me the flexibility to go back and change ratings as I replay the game over time, though my original thoughts and score will remain visible so that it can be seen how my opinion has changed.

I will also, once I’ve a few under my belt, create an Excel table where all my scores can be seen and compared. It will be good then to see how other people rate the games, and hopefully, we can get some discussion going with a ‘readers’ rating developing…

Mmm, sounds like I’m planning for the future there…

On that note, I have made the decision to continue with my blog, at least for another year, and try to set aside more time for it. Yippee!!

Let’s see how it goes, and I look forward to posting my first RATED! review.

Sounds like a comprehensive system, and should hopefully make it easier for you doing your write ups in the future.

      Thanks Dave.
That’s the aim of the game and hopefully I should go over my old reviews in short order before moving on to new games.

Crikey, Justin, that sounds well thought out and, as Dave’s said, comprehensive! 🙂 I wish more people that I’ve worked with over years thought stuff out as thoroughly! I’ll look forward to seeing what comes along!

      Lol! Thanks John.
I have actually had this in mind for sometime and had the building blocks in place, so it didn’t take much to put it in some semblance of order.
Actually, it was quite fun to do!

In my past reviews, I always posted the age indicated on the box and the age I believed suitable, so I will keep that in the intro, thanks for the pointer 🙂

I can only concur with what others have said. This looks like a pretty thorough way of reviewing games while saving you time. That seems like a win-win to me and I look forward to seeing your thoughts on games in the near future as well!

Thanks Jeff, though I wouldn’t call it thorough, concise maybe, at least that’s my vision of it!
We shall see how it goes, as I’m just starting with Mansions of Madness, a game a reviewed right at the start, but want to get a few written before I post anything so that I can get a feel of how to rate them compared to each other, if that makes sense?

I think its pretty thorough in the amount of categories you cover. I struggle to think of any you might be missing. Making sure you get your scoring system worked out and calibrated is a smart move as well, me ol’ mucker!
