Marvel: Crisis Protocol – The Amazing Spider-Man

Let’s start by saying just how much I dislike painting Spider people. I hate it!

That suit drives me crazy… so much and yet so little detail.

Marvel: Crisis Protocol - The Amazing Spider-Man

I think this is the third or fourth I’ve done now and I kept putting him off, and putting him off. Well, I finally decided to crack on and get him done and, actually, I like the result even though the process to get there wasn’t particularly enjoyable.

There’s not a lot to this sculpt. A structure, an explosion, and what amounts to a mostly 2-colour superhero. All relatively straightforward, one would think, but I found him really fiddly and certainly a case for painting before gluing, which, alas, I didn’t do.

I painted the suit a different way to the previous iterations of the Spider, in that I basecoated the red suit with Blood Red, inked over with violet to fill in the lines, and then highlighted up, though not quite enough judging from the photos.

The blue parts were based with Glacier Blue then painted over with three coats of Mystic Blue Xpress paint. I then finished with a glaze of ink.

I decided to go against the grain when it came to painting that explosion. Pretty much every version I looked at of this one was painted with a light grey, dusty explosion, which was much lighter and brighter than what I had in my head.

I wanted to portray something a bit more sinister, something a bit more toxic and dangerous, so I went with a dark fireball kind of explosion, which I think worked in adding a little atmosphere to the sculpt as a whole – what do you think?

I even added a bit of sand to the base to blend in the explosion, most unlike me!

I quite like the web, too, another Xpress paint – Templar White.

As usual, I got a bit carried away with rust effects on the structure, but overall, I’m quite pleased with how he came out. He actually looks like what I had in mind right from the start and that makes quite a pleasant change!

Must be great to finally have him done, and you’ve done a cracking job on it too.

Nicely done, Justin! 🙂 I’m not a Spiderman fan as a rule, but I really like how he’s come out! If you get this comment twice it’s because I had trouble connecting so I resorted to emailing my comment!

Thanks, John, I have to admit that when it comes to painting them I’m not a fan either!
Yasmin, on the other hand, as she has nothing to do with the creative side, loves ’em and torments me by buying more!

The painting is very clean, mate! I’m sure the suit takes some precision but its well-worth it. I like the suit colors you chose as well. I guess that is how I like Spidey to look 🙂

I’m not as crazy about the debris behind him but that’s due to the sculpting. To me, it doesn’t scan/read right visually. It also dominates the miniature a little too much so in this case, I think you were smart to keep it with duller colors in the background.

      Thanks Jeff.
I do like the more traditional Spidey look, too. It’s just how I remember him from my youth!

He does look better from certain angles but I agree, it’s not the best sculpt. I think he’s too small for his surroundings, which isn’t helped by him being fairly plain, in that there’s not a lot of detail to him.

Sorry to one and all about the delay in answering comments on this post.

Time has just slipped away… before I know it, it’ll be Christmas!
