Adventures in Bolt Action: Volkssturm!

Get the flags out. Hoot your horn, Give me a big round of applause… I’ve finally painted another unit for Bolt Action!

Volkssturm! The old, the young, and the unfit. The scrapings from the bottom of the barrel.

I thought I’d start my journey of painting the German forces with something a little more interesting than painting lots of grey uniforms. No, to be honest, I started with these because they were metal and didn’t need assembly!

I also wanted to try out the various different colours I have for German uniforms and because these are an eclectic bunch I figured I could throw pretty much whatever I wanted at them.

I primed them all black and then airbrushed a base uniform colour – a couple of different Field Greys, a couple of Browns, and a Field Blue.

From there, it was just adding in the rest of their kit, a bit of work on the flesh, and a few different colour wasehes.

I based them up along the same lines as my Soviet Unit and was surprised just how quickly I’d got them done. Certainly, using the airbrush helped. Spraying just a thin coat over the black primer I was able to achieve some ready made shadowing.

I’m really pleased with how these came out and it surprised me in the fact that I’m now actually quite keen to paint some more Bolt Action stuff, which is good, because I still haven’t finished my tanks!

Fantastic work Justin, a very eclectic bunch, so can see the many reasons you went for this unit first ! LOL The color choices work well, and great detail work as well.

      Thank you Dave!
I’m working up to having to assemble the next lot 🤔

Yay, Justin, way to go! 🙂 I like these! A very mixed bunch indeed! And my one limited claim to fame in relation to these figures is that I have handled a real (though inert) Panzerfaust (at RMCS, now the Defence Academy)!

      Thanks John.
Wow! That must have been an experience; love to get involved in all the history, especially hands on.

Nice work on these eclectic minis! They look great and have lots of personality. I don’t envy you when it comes to painting up forces in similar uniforms however. That is the kind of painting that will put me to sleep 🙂

Thanks, Jeff, and yeah, not looking forward to it myself, though I’m more in tune with it now than I was before. I think it’s the want to play overcoming the need to paint – Wargaming was a big thing for me back when I was about 10-12, though mostly Napoleonic I also had a fair number of WWII minis (non of which were painted), and I’d love to recapture the experiences I had back then of creating mass battles, though maybe not with books as hills and the odd chair leg as a large tree!

That sounds like a great plan and having the desire to recreate these experiences will hopefully motivate you to see it through 🙂
